Natively, Dynamics GP doesn't always do a good job of enabling users to resolve common issues on their own. A classic example of this is the prompt displayed when attempting to access a record that is locked by another user. By default, as a user you are presented with the very generic message:
This is the message presented when attempting to access a document that is locked by another user in Sales Transaction Entry. Now, you can download the free Record Lock Tracing addon for Dynamics GP (Tested on v10 and GP2010) that will replace this generic message with a message that includes the specific user that has the record locked:
This has already solved some headaches for some of my clients eliminating the need to contact their internal IT department in order to determine which user has a record locked. This is particularly useful during periods with heightened urgency such as when processing shipments and invoices at month end.
This can be extended to include other transactions such as Purchase Orders. I'm happy to build on this further if there is demand for it. Please leave me a comment or send me an e-mail and let me know how I might extend this to add value for you.
Initially, this script was published to return a list of SOP Documents with the User ID that had a lock on each: http://mbsguru.blogspot.com/2007/12/who-has-that-record-locked.html
Then, a client with a large number of order processing users requested that the script display which user has a document locked when presented with the standard "This transaction is being edited by another user." message in Sales Order Processing when attempting to access a document that is... well... being edited by another user. That was done with VBA and we recently decided that would be better produced with Visual Studio Tools as a .dll that you could drop into your Addins directory instead of having to deal with edits to VBA projects.
Since, it has been extended to replace the same "This transaction is being edited by another user." message in Purchase Order Entry with a message that will specifically identify which user has the Purchase Order locked. Below are the release notes to date:
02/13/2011 - Replace "This transaction is being edited by another user." in SOP with a message that will specifically identify which user has the Sales Document locked.
02/16/2011 - Replace "This transaction is being edited by another user." in POP with a message that will specifically identify which user has the Purchase Order Document locked.
(v2) 08/28/2011 - Replace "This batch is being edited by another user." in SOP with a message that will specifically identify which user has the Sales Batch locked. http://www.andosi.com/blog/15-record-lock-trace-v-2-0
(v2) 08/28/2011 - Clear all records that are locked by users that are not actively logged in to GP. http://www.andosi.com/blog/15-record-lock-trace-v-2-0
